GPS AVL
Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) is an advanced method of remote vehicle tracking and monitoring using Global Positioning Satellites. Each vehicle is equipped with a GPS receiver that receives signals from a series of satellites, and calculates its current location, speed, and heading. This information is periodically reported via a wireless link to a central dispatch/control location where it is displayed on a geographical map down to the street level.
The Metro Mobile Radio AVL solution may use various wireless systems to report position to dispatch including VHF/UHF two way radio, GPRS & CDMA 1xRTT, trunking systems, or even your own radio system. The choice or radio system depends on the area of coverage required. Wide area coverage throughout North America would use the cellular/PCS network. Local area coverage may use either Metro's wireless systems or your own radio system if available.
The Metro Mobile Radio AVL solution is a free standing system that does not rely on web based mapping but instead used a customer premise located computer to collect and process vehicle messages and location information. This provide for very rapid response and the ability to quickly display different map areas.
